New 'Shang-Chi' trailer hints at some pretty big father issues

Marvel just dropped the official trailer for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, giving us a glimpse at the titular martial artist's (Simu Liu) unusual past. This also includes a pretty turbulent relationship with his father Wenwu (Tony Leung) — aka the Mandarin.

"I thought I could change my name, start a new life," says Shang-Chi, echoing the sentiments of thousands of immigrants before him. "But I could never escape his shadow."

Of course, the fact that his dad is "a criminal who murders people" adds an extra layer of complication to the situation.

"You are your mother," says Jiang Nan (Michelle Yeoh), speaking to Shang-Chi about his family's legacy. "And whether you like it or not, you are also your father."

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings will hit theatres September 3.
