The woman behind the dance moves that rocked the internet in Childish Gambino's provocative "This Is America" music video is a 23-year-old phenom named Sherrie Silver — and she has a thing or two to teach us all.
Silver appeared in a recent BBC video in which she talked about the inspiration behind her choreography, how she came to work for Childish Gambino, her upbringing in Africa and the United Kingdom, and more.
"I stand for taking Africa to the world, and taking the world to Africa, through dance," Silver said.
Childish Gambino, Donald Glover's musical act, released his music video for "This Is America" in May. Its shocking imagery and the juxtaposition of Glover's big-toothed smile with unflinching violence playing out behind it caused the video to rocket around the internet. It has racked up over 312 million views on YouTube as of this writing.
Silver clues viewers in on how to re-create the dance moves from the viral video. That comes at about the 3:45 minute mark, and will have you practicing the move she invented in front of your screen in no time.
She didn't want Donald Glover's moves to appear stale and robotic, but to have a lot of life and movement. So Silver took inspiration from the dancing and celebratory mood in her church in Africa.
