Imagine waking up, hoping to do a spot of gardening in the backyard, only to find a massive hole is eating it up.

A sinkhole has opened up in a backyard in Ipswich, a suburb of Queensland, Australia. It was discovered on Tuesday morning by the next door neighbours of Lynn and Ray McKay, who alerted them to the gradually-opening hell mouth on the McKay's property.

"I come out and I've got a hole in the ground, it was only a little one, a metre, and it's just got bigger since," Ray McKay told ABC News. The hole has since opened up to eight metres wide.

According to the news outlet, the Department of Mines have been alerted due to a former mine shaft being located in the area, but it'll be a few more days until authorities can figure out what exactly is going on.
