Both sides of the Trump coin are skewered in a sharp 'SNL' cold open

The punchline? Everyone has firmly held opinions that won't matter in the slightest when all is said and done.

Saturday Night Live set aside lame send-ups of famous political personalities for something a bit more real in its latest cold open sketch.

A rotating view of the dinner conversations unfolding in three separate homes around the U.S. presents different views on Donald Trump and impeachment. The diverse California liberals are thrilled, the white conservatives in South Carolina are incensed, and the black family in Georgia is unconcerned in accepting the inevitability of a Trump acquittal and eventual re-election.

There is of course a lone dissenter in each family – comprised entirely of SNL cast members – whose disagreement opens the way to discussion and comedy. But that's not the punchline. No, the real kick comes at the end when we cut back to the talking snowman narrator (Aidy Bryant), who points out that none of it matters.

"They live in states where their votes don't matter, because none of them live in the three states that will decide our election. ... It all comes down to 1,000 people in Wisconsin who won't even think about the election until the morning of."

Aside from sidestepping the very real and ongoing threat of foreign interference influencing the 2020 election, the sketch has it, unfortunately, dead on. Also, Greta Thunberg (Kate McKinnon) shows up right at the end with an even more dispiriting holiday message.

Happy holidays, folks!
