Saturday Night Live Weekend Update hosts Colin Jost and Michael Che aren't exactly immune from criticism. But Jost nails the absolute lunacy of the situation they were in coming back to the show on Oct. 3 after months away – in the middle of a pandemic, no less – and being just hours removed from the world learning Donald Trump has COVID-19.
Che is also correct that while anyone's affliction with the illness that's rocked the planet is no laughing matter, Trump getting it is funny on a purely "mathematical" level. It's just too on the nose. This person who has spent the entire pandemic downplaying the danger and undermining public health officials now has the thing he claimed wasn't a big deal. And within hours of the news coming out, he was in the hospital with a reportedly rocky prognosis.
This Weekend Update may not be huge on laughs, but it sure is cathartic to hear Jost and Che give voice to all the terrible things people have no doubt been thinking since Trump's health became the news.
