Why did Trump pick JD Vance as his running mate? This is the question Stephen Colbert asks in the Late Show clip above, comparing Vance's charisma to that of a plank of wood.

As a case in point, Colbert plays a clip of Vance at a rally in Ohio, making a joke about Democrats and Mountain Dew that falls flat before he awkwardly laughs and says "I love you guys."

"Oh buddy, you sound like a groom who invited only co-workers to his bachelor party," says Colbert, launching into a Vance impression. "I love you guys, thanks for coming to my mom's house. Hey, should we get a little crazy and order another round of Diet Mountain Dew? If the Democrats let us, am I right? Where's everybody going? Just you and me again, mom."
