After Donald Trump referred to Apple's CEO Tim Cook as "Tim Apple," Stephen Colbert weighed in on the "ongoing national scandal that we're calling Applegate (not Christina)."

There was no way Trump's gaffe, which took place last week at a White House roundtable, would get by The Late Show host.

"Tim Apple, yeah, one of the three famous Apple Boys: Tim, Pine and Cran," Colbert joked on Monday night.

Trump wheeled out two different excuses for the error, first telling donors that he actually said "Tim Cook Apple" really quickly, but that that the "fake news" media hadn't heard the "Cook" part.

Later, Trump tweeted a second version of events, saying he'd actually said "Tim/Apple" as "an easy way to save words."

"Mr President, words don't just disappear from the middle of sentences," said Colbert. "Unless it's CBS bleeping me when I say excuses like this are ****ing insane."
