Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced on Tuesday that the Democrats would be launching an impeachment inquiry, after Donald Trump's admission he tried to get the Ukrainian president to investigate potential 2020 rival Joe Biden — an offense that, as Stephen Colbert puts it, "makes Watergate look like Richard Nixon tried to pass an expired coupon at the Kroger."

After the last few years of near-constant scandal, it's no wonder Colbert's Late Show audience responded to this late breaking news with a roaring standing ovation that lasts nearly a full minute.

That said, as big a step as Pelosi's announcement is, Colbert's quick to point out that it's almost the only part of Tuesday's news cycle that feels especially unusual.

"Historic, high-stakes testimony in Congress, from someone with intimate knowledge of Trump's criminal wrongdoing! We haven't had one of those in days."
