Trump picked the worst possible weekend for his secret Taliban meeting, and it broke Stephen Colbert

We're nearly three years into the Trump administration, which from the perspective of most professional funny people has consisted of a very brief "What a rich source of endless jokes!" moment and a so-far interminable "I don't even have a joke for that" phase that has rendered the phrase "beyond satire" completely meaningless. The late night hosts and their writing teams keep trying, because they're paid to — but sometimes even they have to admit they got nothin'.

Take Stephen Colbert and apparently the entire staff of the Late Show, who tried and failed to come up with a funny analogy to illustrate just how wild it is that the president's secret diplomatic meeting with Taliban and Afghan leadership at Camp David was to take place mere days before the anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks — at least before he cancelled it and then bragged about it.

"Yes, Donald Trump invited the Taliban to Camp David the weekend before 9/11. That's like..." Colbert trails off. "There's nothing that's like that. That's what that is like."

"Does Donald Trump know what 9/11 is?"

Colbert does recover enough to remind us exactly why the meeting was cancelled — and it's not because he decided to not meet with "bad people" at the symbolic presidential retreat.
