Pumpkin carving doesn't have to lead to jack-o'-lantern faces.

Stop motion artists Sean Ohlenkamp and Rob Popkin took dozens of pumpkins, carved each one into intricate details and brought them to life by using each pumpkin as a 'frame' in an animation. The video looks straight out of the Nightmare Before Christmas movie, and it only took a few years to produce. No big deal or anything.

Ohlenkamp explained on Reddit the pumpkins had to be photographed twice for both the lighting (strobe lights were used) and carvings. Each frame was important, (with four hours of original positioning) and one wrong placement can mean utter chaos.

Sound designers created the music specifically for the project. They used actual pumpkins and carving tools for the beats to make the project even more mesmerizing.

So, the next time you decide to participate in fall activities, consider making your very own stop motion movie. It'll only take you a few years and a couple hundred pumpkins.
