Tesla's Model 3 was released Friday to its first owners: 30 lucky employees who will be beta testing the electric sedan before the rest of us mere mortals get our hands on one.

The first owners all received the higher-end model, priced at $44,000. The Model 3's base model will cost just $35,000, putting it in the same price range as the Chevy Bolt EV.

Driving the car is pretty damn awesome, as Mashable's Chief Correspondent Lance Ulanoff can attest, but it may be quite some time before others who preordered the car can get behind the wheel. Tesla CEO Elon Musk said the company is about to go through about "6 months of manufacturing hell."
