If you mainly know Kumail Nanjiani as the delightfully despicable Dinesh from HBO's Silicon Valley, The Big Sick trailer might come as something of a shock.

In it, Nanjiani steps into the spotlight as a romantic leading man in his own right – and the results look as likely to make you cry as they are to make you laugh.

Especially once you know the true story behind the tale: it's inspired by his romance with Emily V. Gordon, now his wife (uh, spoiler alert) and the co-writer of the movie. (She's played by Zoe Kazan onscreen.)

While Nanjiani and Gordon were dating, she fell gravely ill and was put into a coma. Naturally, that upended their relationship in a big way.

With Michael Showalter (Wet Hot American Summer) behind the camera and Judd Apatow serving as producer – not to mention the likes of Ray Romano, Holly Hunter, Anupam Kher, and Adeel Akhtar in supporting roles as various family members – The Big Sick has all the makings of this summer's big breakout indie hit.

Mashable's Entertainment Editor Josh Dickey quite liked The Big Sick at Sundance, and it looks like the Big Sick team liked him in return – he's quoted in the trailer above, right around the 2:08 mark. (You can read his longer writeup here.)

As for the rest of us, we'll have to wait and see The Big Sick when it hits theaters June 23.
