MLK Day, which took place on Monday in the U.S., is intended to mark the birthday of civil rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr. But for some brands and local businesses, it apparently marks an opportunity to try and cash in.

"As we get further and further away from his life, it's easy to forget what he was really about," says Daily Show correspondent Roy Wood Jr. in the clip above. "Which means sometimes people celebrate him in a really ****ed up way."

Wood Jr. follows this up by listing some examples of people who have got MLK Day very wrong — from the store offering a 25 percent discount on black clothes to the party flyer showing a photo of MLK alongside the words "FREEDOM 2 TWERK."
