Upstairs, Downstairs...but make it football?

If you're in need of a juicy period drama to fill the Downton Abbey-shaped void in your life, then we've some good news for you.

Julian Fellowes — creator of our beloved Downton — is back with something new to get stuck into. This time...it's about football. No, seriously.

The English Game is a six-part drama exploring the origins of footie and the class divide that marked the game's ascent to becoming the deeply popular sport it is today.

Set in the 19th century, the series follows two footballers on different sides of a class divide. Judging by the trailer, you can expect some North and South-style industrial mill scenes, along with what looks like a very generous helping of the upper echelons — a Fellowes classic.

The series is written and executive produced by Fellowes and directed by Birgitte Stærmose and Tim Fywell. It stars Edward Holcroft (Kingsman: The Golden Circle), Kevin Guthrie (Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald), and Charlotte Hope (Game of Thrones).

Sounds right up our street, to be honest.

The English Game will be released on Netflix March 20, 2020.
