Following in the footsteps of FX's Legion, Fox has given a series pickup to a new drama set in the X-Men universe.
The Gifted tells the story of a suburban couple whose ordinary lives are rocked by the sudden discovery that their children possess mutant powers. Forced to go on the run from a hostile government, the family joins up with an underground network of mutants and must fight to survive.
The cast includes genre staples Stephen Moyer (True Blood) and Amy Acker (Person of Interest), along with Sean Teale, Jamie Chung, Coby Bell, Emma Dumont, Blair Redford, Natalie Alyn Lind and Percy Hynes White.
The series is produced by 20th Century Fox Television in association with Marvel Television -- further strengthening the small-screen bond between the two studios, which also collaborated on Legion (but have yet to make nice and connect the X-Men franchise to the wider Marvel Cinematic Universe).
The Gifted is written and executive produced by Matt Nix, and executive produced by X-Men movie gurus Bryan Singer, Lauren Shuler Donner and Simon Kinberg, along with Marvel TV's Jeph Loeb and Jim Chory.
Singer also directed the pilot, which is the latest in a string of Marvel projects to be greenlit for the 2017-18 season, including ABC's Inhumans, Freeform's Cloak and Dagger and New Warriors, and Hulu's Runaways.
