A new Little Mermaid trailer has just surfaced on the web, but there's a catch.

Unlike so many of the other live-action remakes we've gotten in recent years (up to and including next week's Beauty and the Beast), this Little Mermaid does not come from Disney. Instead, it's an unrelated production by Conglomerate Media and Kingsway Productions.

There's more. This Little Mermaid plays less like a straightforward adaptation of Hans Christian Anderson's classic fairy tale and more like a reimagining of it. Loreto Peralta plays a young girl who discovers a mysterious creature (The Shannara Chronicles' Poppy Drayton) whom she believes to be the real Little Mermaid.

No word yet on when The Little Mermaid will splash into theaters, but it'll almost certainly beat the other Little Mermaids currently in development -- including, of course, one from the Mouse House. In the meantime, there's also The Lure, a darker and dreamier take on the myth which is in select theaters now.
