It's a tale as old as time: Girl meets mer-boy, girl falls in love with mer-boy, girl has to save mer-boy from a sadistic Michael Shannon.

... Okay, on second thought, maybe this story isn't such a familiar one after all.

The Shape of Water is the new movie from director Guillermo del Toro, who's always had something of a soft spot for monsters: Pan's Labyrinth, Hellboy, Pacific Rim, and Crimson Peak are all from him.

The trailer plays up Shape of Water as a thriller, and it's not not that – but it's really even better as a romance. It's sweet, smart, and surprisingly sexy, which isn't a sentence I ever thought I'd type about a love story involving a sea creature.

The Shape of Water is in theaters December 8.
