Is humanity exclusive to humans? If there's an answer, it might be in Guillermo Del Toro's The Shape of Water, starring Sally Hawkins as a lab assistant exposed to a mysterious sea creature.

The trailer also features Michael Shannon, Michael Stuhlbarg, Octavia Spencer, and Richard Jenkins. Shannon's character regards the creature as untameable, other -- a monster that defies nature -- while Stuhlbarg's marvels at its intelligence and empathy. As Elisa, who is mute, Hawkins connects with this unlikely companion, and must fight to save its life.
The Shape of Water opens December 8.
