Neil deGrasse Tyson took to Twitter following the horrific events in Texas and Ohio, to make a point about mass shootings that was widely criticised.

"Often our emotions respond more to spectacle than to data," wrote Tyson, alongside a list of other causes of death that he argued led to a greater loss of life within the same period of time.

Trevor Noah was having none of it.

"I feel like it fundamentally missed the human element of what people are fighting for in America," he said during Monday's edition of The Daily Show. "And that is: trying."

Noah went on to argue that trying to make things better is something he sees as a key part of American culture -- and something deGrasse Tyson's tweet missed.

"You're not saying get rid of guns," he argued. "You're saying try to minimise the chances of this happening. Try to make it as hard as possible for people to own a gun, because you only want people who are willing to work hard to own a gun, to own a gun. You only want people who respect a gun to own a gun."
