Look, there's no real question of which species comes out on top in War for the Planet of the Apes. It's a Planet of the Apes prequel, and if you've seen Planet of the Apes, you already know.

So the fact that we care at all is a huge credit to director Matt Reeves, star Andy Serkis, and the rest of their team.

In War, which follows Rise and Dawn, Caesar finds himself stuck in a war he never wanted in the first place, against a human leader played by Woody Harrelson, who'll do whatever he needs to do in order to ensure the survival of their own species.

As the apes suffer more and more losses, Caesar is driven to darker and darker places – and eventually finds himself wrestling his own inner demons even as he leads his kind in war against the humans who want them dead.

War for the Planet of the Apes is in theaters July 14.
