The right to vote seems as American as apple pie on the Fourth of July. But it wasn't always that way. And it still sort of isn't.

Americans of all backgrounds, races and genders were not always guaranteed the right to vote. Black men were excluded for almost a century after the United States first gained independence, and women were left out for even longer.

It wasn't until the Voting Rights Act of 1965 that things started to really change. But since then, some states and local elections have put other barriers in place. Find out what those restrictions are in this We the Voters short film.
