Three teenage girls from the Denver, Colorado, area were stopped in Europe while possibly en route to join the Islamic State, the FBI said on Tuesday.
An FBI spokeswoman says agents helped bring the girls back home after agents stopped them in Germany. "The juveniles are safe and reunited with their families," said spokeswoman Suzie Payne.
She didn't reveal the identity of the girls or any other details.
Relatives told VOA News' Somali Service that the three girls left the Denver area late last week and flew to Frankfurt.
According to VOA, two of the girls, ages 15 and 16, are sisters of ethnic Somali origin. The third girl is reportedly from Sudan, and her age is unknown; one of the girls told German authorities that they were going to Turkey "to study.”
But a law enforcement official told ABC News the girls were trying "to fulfill what they believe is some vision that has been put out on a slick media campaign" by radical groups in Syria -- like ISIS. They were, the official said, part of a worrisome trend of "disaffected youth."
