LONDON -- People's futuristic transport dreams are in a pile of smoldering rubble after photos of dozens of unsafe hoverboards being destroyed emerged.

Surrey County Council tested the hoverboards imported from Hong Kong via Heathrow airport. They were found to have defective battery packs and other faulty features which could have led to them exploding, so they were destroyed last week, a spokesman told Mashable.

Some of the boards even caught fire while they were being destroyed and had to be doused with a powder-based fire extinguisher, the council said. The material was sent for recycling after the destruction.
