One is a former cop whose shooting of a black man in the back was captured on video. The other is suspected of killing 9 black people, during a shooting rampage in a Charleston church this week.

The shootings, which both received national attention, took place less than 10 miles apart -- and now the two men are being kept in adjacent cells at a South Carolina jail.

Dylann Roof, who allegedly shot and killed nine congregants of a historic black church in Charleston, S.C. on Wednesday night, is being held in cell 1141B at the Sheriff Al Cannon Detention Center in North Charleston.

Next door, in cell 1140B, is Michael Slager, the former police officer who shot Walter Scott in the back, an incident that was captured by a bystander on video. Slager was indicted on June 8 and faces the rest of his life behind bars. Roof, who has reportedly admitted to the murders, will likely face the death penalty.

Police have confirmed the two are neighbors.

Despite their close proximity in jail, the two are unlikely to actually become friends. Slager's been held in isolation to protect him from the general population, his attorney told CBS News in April.

Roof, who reportedly said he wanted to kill blacks, will surely get the same protective treatment.
