A woman in Inverness, Florida wasn't having it when a 7-foot-6-inch alligator attacked her dog and dragged it into a lake earlier this week.

And so she did what we'd all do when your pup is moments away from becoming lunch -- she went in after it.

"I said, 'God, no this can't be happening,' and it was the scariest feeling in the world," Lori Beiswenger told local news station WTSP of the moment she decided to go after her dog, Hope, as it was being pulled into the pond.

"I'm just grabbing it and it was right there. I just kept pulling and saying, 'You're not getting this, you're not going out there,' because I knew what he had in mind," Beiswenger said.

The gator eventually dropped Hope from its clutches, and the nine-year-old pup came running up out of the lake. Despite a severed artery and other injuries, Hope survived.

The gator was later "trapped and killed," according to an WTSP anchor.

"It's a miracle. It's really a miracle that she survived it," said Beiswenger, who described her actions as "the dumbest bravest thing I ever dove."

The incident wasn't Hope's first dance with death. Beiswenger rescued the dog before it was scheduled to be put down at a local dog shelter. Later, it was run over by a car but survived.

It certainly gives new meaning to the phrase: "Keep Hope alive."
