LONDON -- In the aftermath of Storm Desmond, thousands of British people have been forced to leave their flooded homes.

Thirteen inches of rain fell in Carlisle, UK, over the weekend, leading to hundreds of waterlogged houses, severe flood warnings, and many stranded residents being evacuated by rescue services.

Channel 4 News journalist Alex Thomson, who has been reporting from Carlisle, took to Twitter on Tuesday morning to share some of the DIY solutions rescuers have been using to combat the flood.

In many cases the water levels are so high that people have been forced to take shelter on the second floors of their homes. Life rafts are too big to fit through front doors, so to avoid people having to get wet rescuers have been using objects like fridges to ferry them out to the boats.
