As Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tspiras announced his resignation Thursday night, Greeks on Twitter let out a collective groan at the prospect of a second national election in less than nine months.
Tsipras and his left-wing Syriza party were elected in January after campaigning to end six years of austerity. But the 41-year-old leader was unable to keep his promise. In July, following a national referendum where more than 61% of voters said "no" to international creditors' latest deal terms, Tsipras caved and agreed to a harsh bailout program. It is Greece's third such program since 2010.
Tsipras lost his majority in parliament last week after almost a third of Syriza leaders refused to support it.
"I want to be honest with you," Tsipras said in his live television address on Thursday.
"We did not achieve the agreement we expected before the January elections. I feel the deep ethical and political responsibility to put to your judgment all I have done, successes and failures."
Meanwhile, the top Twitter topic in Greece was #ekloges2015_round2 -- ekloges means elections in Greek -- along with 20 September, the expected date of the snap election. In a show of the biting Greek sense of humor, #Syriza_quits_song was trending, too.
Here's how Greeks reacted to news of the deal.
Bring it on.
