As Friday's news cycle has made abundantly clear, there are still a handful of Americans out there who think Barack Obama is a secret Muslim. But did you know a smaller handful, perhaps just a pinch, think he's Jewish?
Donald Trump is under fire after a man at his town hall in New Hampshire Thursday night said, "We have a problem in this country, it's called Muslims. We know our current president is one," and Trump, perhaps not all too surprisingly, failed to correct him. And according to a recent CNN poll, one in three Americans think Obama is Muslim.
One in a hundred think he's Jewish.
While nearly 40% guessed correctly that Obama is a Christian or Protestant, 4% responded Catholic, 2% Mormon and 1% Jewish when asked, "Do you happen to know what religion Barack Obama is?"
(The poll's margin of error is plus or minus 3 percentage points.)
CNN's poll isn't the first time Obama was thought to be a Jew.
In May, Obama addressed a Washington, D.C., congregation and mentioned how The Atlantic columnist Jeffrey Goldberg called him the "first Jewish president."
"Since some people still seem to be wondering about my faith, I should make clear this is an honorary title, but I was flattered," he said. "And as an honorary 'Member of the Tribe,' not to mention somebody who has hosted seven White House seders and has been advised by two Jewish chiefs of staff, I can also say that I am probably getting a little bit of the hang of the lingo."
And in June, longtime Obama adviser David Axelrod reportedly said Obama once told him, "You know, I think I am the closest thing to a Jew that has ever sat in this office."
On Friday, reacting to the news that 1% of Americans thought Obama was Jewish, Goldberg cracked, "And I wasn't even polled."
