A Turkish police officer was killed on Tuesday by an English-speaking woman who blew herself up in a tourism district of Istanbul, according to multiple Turkish news websites.
The woman reportedly walked into a police station in Istanbul's Sultanahmet district and inquired in "bad" English about a lost wallet, governor Vasip Şahin told Turkish television.
Witnesses reported she was wearing some kind of headscarf. Security cameras captured the woman approaching the police station, according to images aired on Turkish TV.
She then detonated her bomb, causing what witnesses say was a "very loud" explosion.
Officials secured the area after the blast.
At least one other police officer was injured in the bombing, though he is "better," Şahin said. The attacker was killed. It is unclear if she died from the blast or from gunfire.
Police reportedly believe that the the Revolutionary People’s Liberation Party/Front (DHKP/C) may have launched the attack, according to Turkey's NTV, though no group has claimed responsibly for the bombing.
The group, which opposes Western interference in Turkish affairs, has launched numerous attacks in the past though its ranks have shrunken from thousands of members in the 70's and 80's to just a hundred or so today, experts say.
A member of the group was jailed for a failed attack near Istanbul's Dolmabahçe Palace just last week.
