Interactive Map Visualizes 1.2 Million Global Traffic Deaths

More than 1.2 million people are killed on the road each year -- and that number is rapidly increasing.

The Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting launched an interactive map this week that visualizes the reported traffic deaths from 2010. The project is part of a larger effort to draw global attention to this "growing public health crisis."

The project collected data from the World Health Organization's global status report on road safety, which states that driving will become the fifth leading cause of death by 2030 "unless urgent action is taken."

The problem is widespread in the developing world, which accounts for only 50% of the world’s road traffic, but 90% of the traffic fatalities, according to the Pulitzer Center.

Find out the number of driving deaths per 100,000 people in any given country by dragging your cursor over the map below. The blue circles link to featured stories. Click "view fullscreen" and a text box will appear in the lower left-hand corner, highlighting interesting facts from various countries.
