The New Yorker paid tribute to Alan Rickman, the news of whose death broke on Thursday, with a cartoon that celebrates two of his most icon film roles.

Benjamin Schwartz' cartoon, released on Thursday, shows Harry Potter and John McClane huddled together at an anonymous bar.

The caption is simple, but poignant: "Here's to the best damned antagonist a guy could ask for."

(function(d, s, id) { var js, fjs = d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0]; if (d.getElementById(id)) return; js = d.createElement(s); js.id = id; js.src = "//connect.facebook.net/en_US/sdk.js#xfbml=1&version=v2.3"; fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js, fjs);}(document, 'script', 'facebook-jssdk'));Remembering the actor Alan Rickman, in this cartoon by Benjamin Schwartz: http://nyer.cm/NtKYv4kPosted by The New Yorker on Thursday, January 14, 2016

Rickman played teacher Severus Snape in the Harry Potter film series and Hans Gruber in Die Hard -- two legendary, idiosyncratic antagonists that helped define his memorable career.

At the time of publishing, the cartoon received almost 50,000 shares on Facebook.

The New Yorker's cartoon is one of many tributes that have poured in for the British actor in the last 24 hours. The cast of Harry Potter discussed their memories of Rickman online, celebrities paid tribute on social media, and fans have also created a miniature memorial at Platform 9 3/4 in King's Cross, London.
