Oprah has taken the "cruel to be kind" approach to her friendship with Gayle King.

In addition to her role as editor-at-large of O, The Oprah Winfrey Magazine, King is also a co-host on CBS This Morning. She revealed via Instagram that shortly after wrapping Wednesday's show, she received a phone call from her best pal Oprah with a bit of constructive criticism: "tell your makeup artist waaaay too red on the lips today".

@Oprah just called & said tell your makeup artist waaaay too red on the lips today and I said proudly "I did that MYSELF" Dead silence on the line ... Hello ??hello?... A photo posted by Gayle King (@gayleking) on Nov 4, 2015 at 10:19am PST

King's proud admission that she, in fact, "did that MYSELF" was met with dead silence. Tough love from a friend of almost 40 years.

Come on, Gayle. When Oprah tells you your lipstick's way too red, you throw that tube in the trash and start from scratch.
