Online Ballot Issues for Oscars Force Academy to Extend Voting Deadline

People picking nominees for the Academy Awards, for the first time ever, were allowed to cast their ballots online for this year's ceremony -- but they've hit a major digital roadblock.

The Academy has extended the voting deadline a day, to Jan. 4, "to make the transition to online balloting as smooth as possible," says Academy Chief Operating Officer Ric Robertson.

Voting members are struggling with password issues when they try to log in to vote, causing them to call a help line or possibly give up on voting, the Hollywood Reporter reports. Some of the voters have been locked out of their accounts after their passwords failed to access their ballots. Some had to wait for the Academy to send a new password through paper mail.

We've reached out to the Academy for comment about the reported log-in snafus.

Despite using a password manager, a Mashable colleague says she has encountered similar issues with the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences page for press credentials.

The Academy has offered resources to help its 5,856 voters transition, including assisted-voting stations in Los Angeles, New York and London as well as the 24-hour help line.

Nominations for the 85th Academy Awards will be announced Jan. 10. Winners will be announced at the Feb. 24 televised ceremony hosted by Seth MacFarlane.
