Australian football coach Phil Walsh was murdered in his home early Friday morning, authorities said.

The coach of AFL team the Adelaide Crows was found at his South Australian home with multiple stab wounds to the chest, according to police. His wife, Meredith, suffered a wound in her leg and is currently receiving treatment.

The 26-year-old son of Walsh, Cy, who lives in the house with his parents, was charged with murder and detained for a psychiatric assessment, according to police.

"At 2 a.m., the son of the family had attended the home and there had been an argument," Superintendent Des Bray told the media. "As a result of that, both Mr Walsh and his wife received the wounds, and the wounds ultimately caused Mr Walsh's death."

A knife was found at the scene, but it is unclear what the argument was regarding or where the weapon was obtained.

"It is absolutely terrible when families are torn apart in such tragic circumstances," Bray said.
