The Zimbabwe Conservation Task Force wants to honor the memory of Cecil the Lion by building a statue of the animal in the national park where he lived.

The statue would be bronze and life-sized, Johnny Rodrigues, Chairman of the ZCTF told Mashable. The cost would be funded by public donations.

"We’ve already got people, and there’s people who want to help," Rodrigues said.

ZCTF has chosen an artist, but hasn't yet received a quote, Rodrigues said. When the organization receives one, the public will be notified.

"The artist is working out weight, height and size so he can give us a price," he said. "Once we know, we'll be waiting for people to pay for it."

Cecil was a famous and beloved African lion who was hunted by an American dentist in early July. The dentist, Walter Palmer, has received widespread criticism for taking Cecil's life.

Although the project will be expensive, Rodrigues said it's important to honor Cecil. "We have to do something in his honor, and those people that want to help can help," he said.
