LONDON -- Parents who received a letter from their children's headteacher asking them not to wear pyjamas on the school run, and to "wash and get dressed," have thrown caution to the wind and shown up in their nightwear.

Parents of pupils at Skerne Park Academy in Darlington, County Durham received a letter earlier this month from headteacher Kate Chisholm asking parents to "dress appropriately in day wear" when bringing their children to school.

Chisholm said that she's tired of parents wearing pyjamas and slippers when they drop off their kids at the school gates each morning. She said she wanted parents to set a good example for the students and that it was "not too much to ask parents to have a wash and get dressed."

The letter quickly made its way to Facebook where it's divided opinion - some have commended it but several parents have continued to show up in their pyjamas.

“Funnily, since it’s gone on Facebook and gone viral, a number of parents wore pyjamas deliberately today to make a point. It’s the same old culprits,” Chisholm said.

Mother Karen Routh, meanwhile, has defended her right to choose what she wears when she takes her eight-year-old daughter Holly to the school. "It’s more important that your child is at school on time than what you wear," Routh told Metro.
