6 striking contenders for Britain's top architecture prize

LONDON -- The shortlist for the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) Sterling Prize for the UK's best new building was announced Thursday, and six intriguing properties have made the cut.

A school, an affordable housing development, a cancer care centre and some luxury apartments by the Thames are all featured, as are extensions to the University of Greenwich and the Whitworth art gallery in Manchester.

"The RIBA Stirling Prize shortlist features exceptional buildings designed for every stage of our lives," RIBA say. They "show why the UK’s architectural talent and ambition is famed around the world."

The winner will be announced on Oct 15, but in the meantime, here's a look at the shortlisted buildings.
