"I'm gonna do this monologue and then go into hiding. Not even Sean Penn will find me."

A beer-swigging Ricky Gervais opened Sunday's 73rd Annual Golden Globes with a monologue that was an emotional roller coaster -- if all the emotions were just different levels of uncomfortable.

Unsurprisingly, he was crass, vicious and even laugh-out-loud funny a few times, while the star-studded audience often looked shocked or nervous.

Gervais took swings at NBC, Caitlyn Jenner, the Hollywood wage gap and Jennifer Lawrence, to name a few, before ending the speech by telling the audience that Golden Globe awards really don't matter.

"To be clear, that was a joke about me shoving Golden Globes I've won up my ass, and they've asked me to host [the show] four times."

Ricky Gervais didn't get the memo that he should have left the trans jokes back in the last century (when they weren't funny either)— Doree Shafrir (@doree) January 11, 2016

Ricky gervais may be crude, but it's still funny. Lighten up people. #GoldenGlobes— Eric (@WhyLee23) January 11, 2016

@rickygervais Nailed it once again! Best opening yet. You continue to be the ONLY reason I watch the golden globes— Dave Shewchuk (@violinshewchuk) January 11, 2016
