Hey girl. Now this is how you make a very sad Keanu.

Russia's powerful media and Internet watchdog Roskomnadzor officially outlawed the use of celebrity Internet memes, according to a clarification it posted on the Russian social network VKontakte earlier this week.

Ticking off a few items that violate a Russian law protecting public figures' personal data, the government body specifically blacklisted the "use of photos of public personas for the purposes of internet memes not pertaining to the actual celebrity."

In other words, Russian media outlets that share images of celebrities with words pasted on top -- memes commonly known as image macros -- "will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law."

So see ya later Sad Keanu.

Oh -- and you better forget about any depicting Russian President Vladimir Putin.

As the Washington Post reported, the law wasn't clarified to protect Keanu's dignity, rather it came in the wake of a lawsuit that was filed by a Russian singer named Valeri Syutkin.

Still, the clarification is yet another backwards step as part of Russia's larger crackdown on freedom of speech and expression.

The country has been given a press freedom score of 81 (on a scale of 0 to 100, with 100 being the worst) by the independent watchdog organization Freedom House, with a status of "not free."
