The Sagano Bamboo Forest, located in Arashiyama district west of Kyoto, is a must-see for any traveler to Japan searching for a certain other-worldly serenity. A massive grove of pole thin, but toweringly tall bamboo immerses visitors in a lush shaded green world.

The grove, located near centuries old UNESCO-designated temples and villas, is even walkable at night, when its several paths and the bamboo themselves, are lit up for all to see.
