Kicking things offJan 21, 2016 12:25 PM ESTGood afternoon and welcome to Mashable's ongoing coverage of what is increasingly looking like a devastating snowstorm soon to bear down on the Washington, D.C. area.MshcdnHere are three things to know as we kick off our live blog.1. About 15 million people from Washington, D.C., to New York City are facing the likelihood of a crippling, life-threatening blizzard beginning on Friday and lasting through early Sunday.2. In Washington, where a dusting of an inch of snow ground Thursday evening's rush hour to a halt, the prospect of 12 to 24 inches of snow, along with strong winds, is particularly ominous. No storm since 1922 has dumped 20 or more inches of snow on the nation's capital, so this could be one for the history books.3. Emergencies have been declared in Virginia and D.C. as officials rush to make final preparations. People in cities from D.C. to New York have been urged to buy what they'll need to stay home for 36 hours, gas up and check on their elderly and disabled neighbors. Further reading: Mashable's Science Editor, Andrew Freedman, has a comprehensive look at the latest models and a rundown of how the snowstorm is already impacting the region.
