Mashable is thrilled to announce that Oscar-winning actor and humanist Forest Whitaker will speak at our Third Annual Social Good Summit, taking place Sept. 22-24 in New York City.

Forest Whitaker was named UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador for Peace and Reconciliation in 2011 for his personal dedication and work in the field of conflict resolution, as well as his commitment to promote humanitarian ideals. He also founded the Los Angeles-based Peace Earth Foundation in 2012.

Mr. Whitaker joins our dynamic lineup of speakers at the Social Good Summit to discuss how modern technology is not only facilitating development around the world, but also bringing peace to troubled urban neighborhoods in the U.S., the border between the U.S. and Mexico and rural conflict areas in Africa, among others.

Joining him onstage are Hans Vestberg, CEO of Ericsson, and Jeffrey Sachs, UN special advisor and director of the Earth Institute at Columbia University.

These three leaders will explore how to create a culture of engagement and action from grassroots to conference rooms.

Brought to you by Mashable, 92nd Street Y, the United Nations Foundation, Ericsson, the U.N. Development Programme and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the third annual Social Good Summit promises to once again showcase the unparalleled potential of citizens united through social media and technology to change the world.

From detailed discussions on mobile technology, women’s economic empowerment, citizen journalism and global health to broader, inspirational talks on kindness and spirituality, few topics will go untouched at the 2012 Social Good Summit.
