Some of India’s waterways are plagued by puffy white foam, a toxic byproduct of polluted runoff in some of India’s largest technology and manufacturing hubs.
Most recently, huge deposits of foam formed in Bellandur Lake in Bangalore, prompting city officials to install nets on roadways which cross over the water. Winds can lift the foam out of the water into the street, where it has in some instances caught fire.
The issues in Bangalore have been attributed to massive development, shrinking sources of water which are able to filter out pollutants and a lack of strong regulatory bodies that can enforce environmental standards, the Los Angeles Times reported earlier this year.
