New York police say a hate crime may have occurred when a man pushed a transgender woman onto the subway tracks after asking her, "What are you looking at?"

The 28-year-old woman, who police haven't identified, was injured in the incident and is being treated for "cuts and bruises" at Bellevue Hospital, according to NBC New York.

An NYPD spokesperson confirmed to Mashable that a hate crime task force is involved in the ongoing investigation into the attack, which happened Monday around 9 a.m., local time.

The attacker was last seen on surveillance video rummaging through a trash can for a water bottle, which he threw at the woman, before reportedly running away.

Police have asked any witnesses to contact Crime Stoppers at 800-577-TIPS.
