A satellite observing Earth has spotted the devastating Washington mudslide from space.
The Operational Land Imager (OLI) on NASA's Landsat 8 satellite captured this image, which shows the magnitude of the mudslide that has so far claimed the lives of 24 people in Washington's rural Snohomish County. At least 176 people remain missing or unaccounted for.
The death toll will likely continue to rise.
"The situation is very grim," Travis Hots, Snohomish County Fire District 21 Chief, told reporters on Tuesday. “We’re still holding out hope that we may still find people who are alive, but keep in mind that we haven’t found anyone alive since Saturday.”
