Rumor: Yahoo Launching a Lifecasting Service

Valleywag has the scoop on a lifecasting service that Yahoo is testing internally. According to a memo obtained by the tech gossip blog, employees have been asked to test a service called Yahoo Live that would compete with the likes of UStream and Justin.tv. Going to live.yahoo.com currently yields a "forbidden" page.

The idea sounds like the same basic premise of existing services: hook up a webcam and broadcast yourself over the Web. Currently, it’s only available to Yahoo employees, with a launch planned for something next month.

Video streaming over the Web has been one of the hot trends early this year, with UStream covering a lot of interesting events ranging from presidential candidate appearances to Hannah Montana and even our own Open Web Awards. However, whether straight up lifecasting – aka, watching me sit in my computer chair – is something that will take off, remains to be seen. There are a few success stories like iJustine and Chris Pirillo, but both of those seems like edge cases at the moment.
