A24 is now making 'Elden Ring' and 'Death Stranding', leaning into video game adaptations
A24 is doubling down on its foray into video game adaptations with a live-action production of Elden Ring.
The indie studio behind The Brutalist, Heretic, and other critical film darlings confirmed to Deadline that it's producing a live-action Elden Ring film. The adaptation of the RPG blockbuster title will be directed by Alex Garland, known for Civil War and Ex Machina. George R. R. Martin, who we all know as the mastermind behind Game of Thrones, also wrote for the Elden Ring game and will be involved in the film as a producer.

It's unclear yet whether developer FromSoftware and Elden Ring's director Hidetaka Miyazaki will be involved as well.

The Elden Ring film is the second video game adaptation that A24 has in the works. In April, Deadline reported that A24 was working on a live-adaptation of Hideo Kojima's Death Stranding, directed by Michael Sarnoski (the upcoming The Death of Robin Hood and A Quiet Place: Day One).
Live-action productions of video games are a new direction for A24, which has built a reputation for prestige, arthouse films. But A24's shift towards more mainstream movies has been forecasted since 2023, when The Wrap reported that the studio was searching for "action and big IP projects," and A24 even reportedly tried to buy the Halloween franchise. We started to see this shift with A24's version of a big-budget action film, Civil War.
Meanwhile, the studio might be losing its cool kid status to competitors like Neon. In recent years, Neon has had major success with Parasite, Longlegs, and Anora by essentially following A24's playbook — their old playbook.
Judging by the record-breaking numbers of A Minecraft Movie, video game adaptations can certainly be lucrative at the box office. That said, the success of HBO's The Last of Us has proven that video game adaptations don't need to be lowbrow, so maybe A24 can pull it off.
