‘Revenant’ director calls 'Mad Max' costumer 'masterful' -- and yes, he clapped
LOS ANGELES -- Yes, Alejandro González Iñárritu did, in fact, clap for Mad Max costume designer Jenny Beavan as she was walking up to accept her Academy Award on Sunday night -- despite multiple reports to the contrary, including right here on Mashable.
The reports were based on a Vine that EW at-large editor Dalton Ross posted showing Iñárritu -- along with at least a dozen others in his section -- not clapping as Beavan took the stage. Iñárritu was singled out presumably because his film, The Revenant, was also in contention for the award (not to mention those folded arms), and folks thought he was throwing shade.

But a moment later, Iñárritu indeed begins clapping along as Beavan, who was seated at the back of the Dolby Theatre and had a long walk to get there, takes the stage.
See for yourself:
Iñárritu also issued a statement to Mashable on Wednesday praising the Oscar winner:
I think Jenny Beavan is a masterful costume designer and very deserving of the Oscar for Mad Max: Fury Road. To suggest I felt anything but admiration is mean-spirited and false. What you don’t see in the 10-second clip being circulated is my applause for Jenny as she ascended the stairs to the stage. I’ve learned a lot this awards season … mostly that I cross my arms too much.
So there you have it, folks -- Iñárritu in fact uncrossed said arms and, in accordance with the custom, struck the palms of his hands together to produce a clapping sound.
The defense rests.
