Where are the stars?

If you hopped over to the LG UltraFine 5K display in Apple's online store recently, you may have noticed that something is missing: a star rating.

A Redditor accused Apple of removing the rating after a "storm of negative reviews," most of which had to do with the monitor failing to wake from sleep. However, it now appears the listing never had any reviews in the first place.

As of this writing, the product has no "Ratings & Reviews" section; we couldn't find a single user review for this particular monitor on Apple's site. In contrast, LG's smaller, 4K UltraFine monitor has a visible star rating at the time of this writing. Check out the screenshots of both products's pages, below.

The rating for the 4K display is quite poor — only 2.5 stars — with many reviewers slamming the monitor for not waking from sleep when connected to a MacBook Pro, and some using that product's reviews section to complain about the 5K version.

"The display remains dark when connected to a 2016 MacBook. Once connected, the MacBook slows down and eventually crashes," one reviewer wrote, echoing similar complaints on Apple's support board.

"Decided to replace my Apple Thunderbolt display with the LG UltraFine 5K for my 2 monitor setup. The 5K has been a disaster. Black screen, screen flashes, eventually leading to a locked up computer," wrote another.

The two LG monitors were a sort of a replacement for Apple's own Thunderbolt displays, which were discontinued in 2016 and have been featured prominently during Apple's last Mac-centric event.

Update Jan. 25 12:06 p.m.: A source at Apple who didn't want to be named says the rating system, which will be exactly the same as it is for the 4K unit, will be turned on later today.

Second update, Jan. 26, 4:04 p.m.: It now appears the reviews section on the 5K monitor was never active before Jan. 25. It is active now, and though there are still some complaints about the monitor not waking from sleep, accusations that Apple may have censored content on the page are unsubstantiated. We have amended the story and headline accordingly.
