Happy World Emoji Day, 24 hours in which we realized that there still isn't an emoji for every mood, activity, job, and clothing style.

The good news is that the emoji-creation industry is always racing to catch up with real-world social mores. Now, we have the promise of Woman With Headscarf and Breastfeeding.

Of the two, Woman With Headscarf, who seems to be staring into your soul, is the most emotive, while the Breastfeeding mom is, as she should be, consumed with her task and stares down lovingly at her cap-wearing, breastfeeding baby.

Apple announced the upcoming availability of these and other new emoji for your messaging needs on Monday, as part of the World Emoji Day celebration.

There's new food emoji for sandwiches and coconut. We haven't seen the coconut one, but Sandwich appears to be made of of white bread, lettuce, tomato, and...spam?

New animals like the Zebra and, for all you Jurassic Park fans, there's the long-extinct T-Rex dinosaur. He looks like a not-too-distant relative of Toy Story's Rex.

Apple is also opening up the fantasy world of emoji, introducing Zombie and Elf emojis. The Elf could be Princess Zelda's (of Legend of Zelda) cousin.

There are also a few new plays on the traditional yellow smiley-face emoji, including a rather stunning mind-blown face ("Exploding Head," officially) and what may be the most disgusting emoji: Face Vomiting.

Apple also, for the first time, revealed the five most popular emoji on iOS. Not surprisingly, it's

  • Thumbs Up

  • Smile

  • Laugh

  • LOL

  • Wink-Kiss

  • Heart

Apple says the new emoji will arrive later this year. We suspect they may come along with iOS11, which is set to launch in the fall, right around the same time we should get a new iPhone 8. The company doesn't share how they came up with all these new emoji characters, but all are approved by the emoji governing body, the Unicode Consortium, which means they can all be added to the iOS keyboard.

Just think of all the fun you'll have with a new OS, new phone and a Bearded Person emoji (or maybe a Zombie and Zebra) to help you craft the perfect text message.
